House Republican Leader Bryan Cutler (R-Lancaster) announced Friday the introduction of House Resolution 501, a measure to establish a House Select Committee to investigate the actions and response of state and local law enforcement regarding the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. The incident occurred in Butler on July 13, 2024.
The bipartisan Select Committee on the Trump Assassination Attempt will include three Republicans and three Democrats. Its mandate is to examine how state and local law enforcement planned, responded, and coordinated with federal agencies during the Trump campaign event on July 13. The committee's report is expected by November 30.
“One Pennsylvanian died and two were critically wounded as an assassin nearly took the life of a former president and the nominee of a major political party in the upcoming election. We must ask the questions of why and what we can do to prevent this from happening in the future,” Cutler stated.
Cutler emphasized Pennsylvania's status as a key battleground state that will host numerous high-level campaign events throughout the remainder of the 2024 election season. He noted that with federal law enforcement increasingly relying on state and local partners for security, it is crucial to understand what transpired from a state and local perspective on July 13 to enhance safety protocols for citizens and candidates at campaign events.
Additionally, in preparation for major events in Pennsylvania related to the Semiquincentennial, the select committee will assess any necessary operational changes required for state and local law enforcement to provide adequate security support.
The committee will collaborate with state and local agency partners to update best practices across law enforcement entities, ensuring public safety during high-profile visits to Pennsylvania.
“The purpose of this committee is not to assign blame but rather give state and local law enforcement a voice so we can collectively identify what happened and learn to improve upon current practices,” Cutler explained.
“Government is charged with protecting the health, safety, and welfare of citizens. As more high-profile events are coming to the Commonwealth in the coming months, we must use this undeniable tragedy to learn from our current practices, understand how we can get better, and take necessary steps to ensure this does not happen in Pennsylvania again.”
Pending its publication on the public legislative website, a copy of House Resolution 501 has been attached to an email accompanying this press release.
