Pennsylvania House Republican Leader Bryan Cutler (R-Lancaster) announced Tuesday that the voter ID constitutional amendment discharge petition now has 101 signatures, following the addition of Rep. Jeff Olsommer (R-Wayne/Pike). This number represents half of the entire Pennsylvania House of Representatives.

Despite this support, new partisan House operating rules require 25 members from each caucus to sign the discharge petition. As a result, the proposal remains in committee despite backing from 101 members and 73% of Pennsylvanians.

“Given the broad support within the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the constitutional voter ID proposal, House Democrats should stop playing political games and immediately get this bill out of committee so we can advance it to the Pennsylvania Senate,” Cutler stated. “The fact that half of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives has signed on to get this proposal out of committee, but partisan rules keep it from the House floor is the opposite of the new day we were promised under the Democrat majority.”

Cutler emphasized that timely action is crucial for getting the proposal voted on by both chambers so it can be presented to voters in November.

“We do not have time to play these hyper-partisan games with meaningful, bipartisan proposals that will advance a widely supported fix to an ongoing election integrity issue,” Cutler added. “We have the opportunity before us to get this important proposal to voters in what is expected to be a high-turnout election. Democrats should stop delaying with partisan games and immediately bring this up for a vote in the House so we can get it in front of voters.”
