HARRISBURG – Senate Republican leaders have put forth a resolution in support of efforts to combat illegal immigration, urging President Biden and other federal officials to address the issue. The resolution, announced just days after backing Texas Governor Greg Abbott's border security initiatives, emphasizes the need to protect American citizens from the negative impacts of illegal immigration.
Senate President Pro Tempore Kim Ward, Majority Leader Joe Pittman, Appropriations Committee Chair Scott Martin, and Majority Whip Ryan P. Aument have circulated a co-sponsor memo for the resolution. It affirms Governor Abbott's constitutional authority to defend Texas and its residents, calling on Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro to join other state leaders in supporting Abbott's actions.
The resolution also urges the Biden Administration to cease opposition to Texas' border security efforts and instead provide resources to assist in securing the border. The lawmakers highlighted the concerns raised by constituents regarding the crisis, emphasizing the need to address issues such as resource strain, fentanyl-related deaths, human trafficking, and the influx of illegal firearms and gang members.
"Many of us are hearing from our constituents who are concerned with this troubling crisis and who have expressed a desire for us to help take a stand against the Biden Administration’s disastrous border policies. This resolution reflects our duty to uphold our oath to support, obey and defend the Constitution of the United States and ensure the safety of its citizens," the lawmakers stated.
State and local officials nationwide have expressed alarm over the challenges posed by the current enforcement policies at the border, calling for decisive action to address the situation.
