HARRISBURG – Senators Wayne Langerholc, Jr. (R-35), Cris Dush (R-25), and Scott Martin (R-13) have introduced a resolution in Pennsylvania to honor the annual THON fundraiser led by Penn State students. The resolution designates the week of February 12-18 as "THON Week" and recognizes the work of the 16,500 Penn State student volunteers who make the fundraiser possible.
THON is a student-run philanthropy effort that provides emotional and financial support for families affected by childhood cancer through the Four Diamonds Fund at Penn State Health Children's Hospital. Since its creation in 1973, THON has raised an impressive $219 million to help 4,800 families.
The culmination of the year-long fundraiser is a 46-hour dance marathon that will take place from February 16-18 at the Bryce Jordan Center. The event will be livestreamed on the THON website, allowing people from all over the world to participate and support the cause. Last year, THON raised over $15 million, showcasing the incredible dedication of the Penn State community in the fight against pediatric cancer.
Senator Langerholc expressed his pride in supporting THON, stating, "Penn State THON showcases the unwavering dedication of students, alumni, volunteers, and supporters in the fight against pediatric cancer."
Senator Dush also thanked Penn State for their support of THON, emphasizing the impact that even small donations can have. He said, "As always, donations large or small, make it possible for pediatric cancer patients and their parents not to have to make difficult choices between what is the best treatment and what their family budget can afford."
Senator Martin commended the young people involved in THON, saying, "I am extremely proud of the amazing efforts of all the young people supporting THON and giving hope to families affected by childhood cancer. THON is a labor of love that sends a strong message to our young cancer warriors and their loved ones: you are not alone."
The resolution introduced by Senators Langerholc, Dush, and Martin demonstrates the recognition and appreciation for the incredible work done by the Penn State community through THON. Their efforts have made a significant difference in the lives of countless families affected by pediatric cancer.
