LAMPETER-STRASBURG SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL: Instructional Model Selection for Start of 2020-21 School Year

Lampeter-Strasburg Senior High School issued the following announcement.

Instructional Model Selection Survey Closes at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, August 10, 2020

Lampeter-Strasburg School District Board meeting, the Board of School Directors approved an amended Health and Safety Plan for the reopening of schools. The amended plan accounts for the updated Department of Health Executive Order requiring universal face coverings, as required by the PA Department of Education. Students or staff with a medical exception are able to provide a verified doctor’s note and the District will work to address any medical concerns, similar to addressing other medical needs of students and staff in need of an accommodation. Face shields are an acceptable face covering as outlined in the Department of Health’s Executive Order. Students will NOT need to wear masks at all times. Guidance provided to schools includes that students are permitted to remove their face coverings when they are: 1) Eating or drinking when spaced at least 6 feet apart; 2) Seated at desks or assigned work spaces at least 6 feet apart; or 3) Engaged in any activity at least 6 feet apart (e.g. face covering breaks, recess, etc.).

The plan also incorporates the most recent Public Health Guidance for School Communities issued by the PA Department of Health and the PA Department of Education.

What happens if a student or staff members tests positive for COVID? All local districts are working with Penn Medicine LGH to follow common protocols and contract tracing that follow the PA Department of Health Guidelines. Following all of the parent input, survey data, and staff input, all building procedures and instructional model offerings remain as previously communicated as “anticipated offering” (July 17, 2020 correspondence) with one exception. High School survey data indicates a larger percentage of students preferring a face-to-face instructional model. With a larger number of students attending in person, we are not able to meet the updated safety guidelines for social distancing that were released by the PA Department of Education on July 16, 2020 (referenced above). The updated guidance utilizes a six (6) foot standard for social distancing practices among students and staff throughout the school day. This is double the amount that was originally recommended by a number of health organizations (WHO, American Association of Pediatrics, and other county health departments), and the recommendations schools were utilizing to develop building procedures. For this reason, the high school (grades 9-12 only) will be offering a blended/hybrid face-to-face instructional option to begin the 2020-2021 school year. As, described in the high school overview below, students with last names (A-L) will attend in person on Monday/Tuesday and students with last names (M-Z) will attend in person on Thursday/Friday. All students will be online the three (3) days they are not attending in person.

Thank you to all families for your recent feedback, comments, and suggestions from the previous parent input surveys. We recognize that selecting an instructional model that best fits your child(ren) is a difficult decision. To assist parents with your selection, we have developed brief overviews of the instructional offerings for each school building at the links below. If you still have questions, concerns, or need clarification after viewing the overview for your child’s building, please reach out to the contact listed in the overview. Thank you for your continued support, patience, and understanding as we navigate the changing orders and recommendations for the reopening of schools. We ask that you make an instructional offering selection for each child by 8:00 a.m. on Monday, August 10, 2020. This will enable the District to balance class sizes, bus assignments, and adjust parent drop-off and pick-up times to best accommodate students.
