LCCTC Student Brings Home Silver Medal in SkillsUSA National Championship

LCCTC students Bradley Weinhold of Manheim Township School District, Chris Corsenzo of Cocalico School District, Elijah Ugalde of Cocalico School District, and Angelica Jones, resident of Donegal School District at the SkillsUSA National Championship in Atlanta, GA.

Lancaster County Career & Technology adult education student Angelica Jones, resident of Donegal School District, took second place in the Dental Assisting competition at the SkillsUSA National Championship in Atlanta, GA. The 58th Annual SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference was held on June 20-24, 2022 at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, GA. The annual SkillsUSA conference is a showcase of career and technical education where more than 5,200 outstanding career and technical education students — all state contest winners — compete hands-on in 108 different trade, technical and leadership fields.

Jones is a student in LCCTC’s intergenerational Dental Assistant program. At LCCTC, a number of full-time certificate and diploma programs are referred to as “intergenerational” programs. These programs permit qualified adult students to attend daytime programs alongside high school students. This allows LCCTC to offer a larger variety of programs to adult learners, creating a unique opportunity for students to expand and continue their education.

Jones’ success in Atlanta follows her achievement as a gold medalist in the SkillsUSA State Championship competition held back in April 2022. During the SkillsUSA competition, Angelica and contestants demonstrated procedures specified in the accreditation standards for Dental Assisting Education Programs of the Commission on Dental Accreditation. Students compete in chair-side assisting; preparation of dental materials; infection control; and emergency, laboratory and office procedures. Skills evaluated may include administrative, clinical or laboratory dental areas.

“The students are showing that they’re the best of the best,” said Melody Miller, LCCTC SkillsUSA Chapter Advisor. “The competition is not just about winning. It really represents their hands-on skills and professionalism.”

In addition to Jones’ silver medal, three additional LCCTC students also placed within their competition categories:

Chris Corsenzo: Graphic Communication, Manheim Township School District

Bradley Weinhold: Sheet Metal, Cocalico School District

Elijah Ugalde: Architectural Drafting, Cocalico School District

A total of 1,150 gold, silver and bronze medals were presented to students on Friday night, June 24, at the SkillsUSA Awards Ceremony at State Farm Arena, which was sponsored by Frontdoor Inc. with keynote speaker Darren Keefe of HGTV.

Skills USA advisor Melody Miller spoke to the experience and its impact on the students. “It was amazing to see students come out of their shell and develop confidence in themselves along with their abilities as they connected with other students from around the nation over the course of the conference,” said Miller. She also expressed gratitude toward the Joint Operating Committee (JOC) for their support in getting both SkillsUSA advisors and students to Atlanta for the competition. “We are so grateful that the JOC finances this and supports the opportunity for our students to attend the competition,” said Miller.
