Small community with a global impact

Martic Elementary School issued the following announcement on May 27.

All 6th graders have read the book, The Long Walk to Water and learned about the shortage of clean water in many countries around the world.  The book details the true story of one of the “Lost Boys”, Salva, and his very long journey to find safety in the midst of war, from living in refugee camps to eventually being offered asylum in the United States. The book also follows the fictional character, Nya’s story of how a lack of water dictates life until water is brought to her village through a life-giving humanitarian organization started by Salva.  Our sixth graders have had great discussions which prompted students to want to help bring clean water to people like those we have read about.

Moved to action: In 2019, Martic 6th graders hosted the very first student generated carnival on the playground. Students made games for younger students to play at recess. These efforts raised money to support the organization started by Salva, Water for Sudan.  Students who desired to participate, paid a small fee to play the games and earn a candy reward. All money raised from these carnival games will be donated to Water for South Sudan. This year students earned $980.65. There was a matching donor gift, so the total was $1961.00. Due to the total donated since 2019, Martic has reached over $5200.00, which is enough to partially sponsor a well. Our school name will be engraved in the cement of a well and printed on a banner. We will receive photos and the GPS coordinates of the village benefiting from the well early next year.

Thank you to all who have participated in this global impact project. It is pretty amazing that our small community has the potential to influence lives around the world.

Global Impact: After facilitating the carnival games for the younger children in the building, our 6th graders raised $1961.00 Their impact was vast.
