Bart-Colerain Elementary School issued the following announcement on Apr. 20.
We are thrilled to announce that Kara Armstrong, Solanco High School senior, has earned national recognition for her writing! Kara was recently notified that she is a National Scholastics Writing Awards Gold Medal winner for her piece, “Nobody Dies in Disneyland.” This is a prestigious honor, and Kara will receive her award in a ceremony at Carnegie Hall on June 9.
Kara says that the inspiration for the award-winning piece came from her brother and a conversation they had about a legend that “nobody dies in Disneyland.” The work was composed in the fall of 2021. It is considered flash fiction, a type of fiction that is very brief while still including a developed plot and characters. It is also Kara’s favorite type of writing to compose.
Kara has been an Independent Study creative writing student with Mrs. Prokay this year which has given her an opportunity to fine-tune completed works as well as those in progress. Mrs. Prokay states that “Kara is one of the most naturally gifted writers I have known. Her commitment to the writing process, desire to experiment with various genres and techniques, her response to feedback, and her ability to consistently produce work of such high quality is impressive. It is a privilege to read her work!” Kara plans to attend Susquehanna University and major in Creative Writing.
In the winter of 2022, Kara earned several regional Scholastics Writing Awards (listed below). “Nobody Dies in Disneyland” then moved on to national adjudication. Congratulations, Kara!
