History of Winter Celebration Day: Joy & Service

High%2520school036

Media-Providence Friends School issued the following announcement on Jan. 11.

Twelve or more years ago, our school decided that the day before Winter Break would be a day of joy and freedom from academic work for Middle Schoolers. Plans were made by the Middle school students for a movie to watch, cookies to bake, and games to play. There was always a component of service to others, mostly done within our school like partner craft activities. Each year plans were made for this day of celebration with more of the day incorporating service to our community. In past years, we created soup mixes and held a clothing drive for Chester Ministries and collected food for Media's Food Bank.

Some service projects are easier to implement during the time of COVID. We've expanded the time we devote to community service on this day, to the point where now service projects take up most of the day.

These include:

  • Casseroles for the Life Center at 69th Street
  • Read Aloud Stories & Crafts/Game with our partner classes (K, 1st, 2nd Grades)
  • Making Dog Biscuits and Cat Toys for animals sheltered at the SPCA
  • Face to Face Sock Drive
  • Pet Food & other Supplies Drive for the Delaware County SPCA
