Rep. Bryan Cutler of Lancaster has expressed his dissatisfaction with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s (FERC) decision to grant a preliminary permit for the construction of a hydroelectric pumped storage facility at Cuffs Run, proposed by York Energy Storage, LLC.
Cutler stated, “The decision by FERC today to grant a preliminary permit to the planned hydroelectric facility at Cuffs Run is disappointing. As I said when this project was announced, while I am in complete support of energy production it is clear the YES Waterpower Project at Cuffs Run will have a detrimental impact on the area.”
He emphasized that local communities, stakeholders, and legislators have voiced concerns about the project’s potential negative impacts. According to Cutler, more than $100 million has already been invested in preserving Cuffs Run for its scenic value and tourism potential. He noted that the project could damage preserved farms, a regional scenic trail, viewsheds of a popular multimodal rail trail, and forested lands crucial for ecological health and waterway protection.
Cutler vowed to continue opposing the project and collaborating with stakeholders and legislators to halt its progress. “I will continue to support our communities around Cuffs Run by opposing this plan and working with stakeholders and fellow legislators to stop this project. Our combined voices will continue to be needed as this process continues,” he added.
