House Republican Leader Bryan Cutler (R-Lancaster) announced Tuesday that the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has invested $441,862 for the preservation of the 107-acre Jeffrey M. Brown crop and livestock farm in Fulton Township.

“Southern Lancaster County is the heart of Pennsylvania’s farming and agriculture industries. The funding being invested in the Jeffrey M. Brown farm helps maintain this family farm and protect it from development so that it can continue to produce crops and livestock to feed families in our region and beyond,” Cutler said.

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, the farmland preservation investment in the Jeffrey M. Brown farm means that the Commonwealth has purchased the development rights to the farmland, protecting it from residential or commercial development.

The purchase in Fulton Township is part of a recent larger farmland preservation effort that has seen the Commonwealth purchasing 2,629 acres on 28 farms in 19 counties to ensure farms are used for farming, not development.

The farms that are part of the most recent round of preservation funding were approved by the State Agricultural Land Preservation Board and equated to a total of $9.8 million investment to keep farms within families that have owned them for generations. Since 1988, Pennsylvania has led the country in farmland preservation, helping preserve 6,392 farms representing over 639,254 acres in 58 counties.
