Cutler: Working Class Tax Increase Will Harm Pennsylvanians

Pennsylvania House Republican Leader Bryan Cutler has criticized House Bill 181, stating that the proposed working-class tax increase would have negative consequences for Pennsylvanians. Cutler argues that the bill unfairly expands the size and scope of an unreliable department within the state’s bureaucracy.

House Bill 181 aims to raise taxes on every working Pennsylvanian through an increase in the payroll tax, with the additional funds being directed towards a paid leave program. Cutler expressed concern about the timing of this tax increase, particularly during the holiday season when families are already facing financial challenges. He believes that House Democrats are disregarding the financial struggles of working-class individuals and sending a message that they do not care.

Cutler emphasized the need to support and empower individuals instead of burdening them with additional taxes. He stated, “We should be inspiring people and opening doors for them to be able to achieve more. Not telling them they need to do more with less.”

Furthermore, Cutler raised concerns about the expansion of the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry under this program. He pointed out that this very department failed to provide unemployment compensation benefits to struggling Pennsylvanians during the COVID-19 pandemic. Cutler criticized the decision to entrust the department with the administration of additional benefits, stating that it is both outlandish and irresponsible.

House Bill 181 is scheduled for a final vote in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives on Wednesday, where its fate will be determined. Cutler’s opposition to the bill reflects the concerns of many who believe that this working-class tax increase will place an undue burden on Pennsylvanians already grappling with economic challenges.

Pennsylvania House Republican Leader Bryan Cutler’s strong stance against House Bill 181 highlights the potential harm that this working-class tax increase could inflict on the people of Pennsylvania. With the final vote approaching, it remains to be seen whether his concerns will sway the outcome.
