HARRISBURG – Pennsylvania House Republican Leader Bryan Cutler (R-Lancaster) criticized House Democrats for their approach to election reform legislation, stating that they are failing Pennsylvanians. Cutler expressed his concerns during a session on Wednesday where House Democrats passed a bill focused on extending pre-canvassing time without addressing other crucial election reform measures.

Cutler emphasized, “House Democrats pushing this bill forward today may make government easier for government, but it does not respond to what the vast majority of Pennsylvanians believe is needed to make our elections better and more secure.” He further criticized the Democrats for prioritizing pre-canvassing over more widely supported reforms such as voter identification requirements.

The Republican Leader pointed out that House Democrats are neglecting popular and easily implementable reforms in favor of their focus on pre-canvassing, which he referred to as their “White Whale” in the realm of election reform. Cutler highlighted recent polling data that showed strong public support for requiring identification each time a person votes as a commonsense reform that would enhance confidence in Pennsylvania’s elections.

In response to the lack of progress on election reform, Cutler noted the growing support for a constitutional amendment for voter identification within the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. He stated, “With 100 signatures on the voter identification constitutional amendment discharge petition, it is clear House Democrats need to get out of their own way and put up this easily achievable election reform for a vote in the House.”

Cutler’s remarks underscore the ongoing debate and disagreements surrounding election reform in Pennsylvania, with Republicans advocating for measures like voter identification while criticizing the current approach taken by House Democrats.
