House Republican Leader Bryan Cutler has announced the formation of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Opportunity Task Force, comprised of House Republican lawmakers. The task force aims to engage with experts and stakeholders to inform future legislative policy decisions regarding artificial intelligence. Cutler emphasizes the importance of addressing the ethical development of AI, as well as implementing appropriate safeguards.

In a letter to several key figures, including Gov. Josh Shapiro and Speaker of the House Joanna McClinton, Cutler highlights the need to strike a balance between protecting citizens from AI misuse and abuse, while also harnessing the potential of this emerging technology. Cutler states, “The time has passed for asking ‘Should we utilize AI?’ We already are; this change is irreversible. Rather, the time is now to ask, ‘How can we, as the entrusted public servants of this Commonwealth, utilize AI in order to achieve what is so important to all of us – a thriving economy, affordable living, safe communities, and family-centered opportunities for our children to learn, grow, and thrive?'”

The AI Opportunity Task Force consists of several House Republican lawmakers, including Rep. Alec Ryncavage, Rep. Stephenie Scialabba, Rep. Robert Leadbeter, Rep. Valerie Gaydos, and Rep. Jason Ortitay. Their immediate focus will be on developing guiding principles and standards for their work. These principles and standards will help shape the review of current legislation and inform the creation of innovative and thoughtful legislative policies.

Cutler acknowledges the challenges ahead for the task force and emphasizes the need for an ongoing role. He encourages the task force to provide periodic reports and recommendations as they navigate the evolving landscape of AI.

The formation of the AI Opportunity Task Force underscores Pennsylvania’s commitment to responsible and effective AI integration. By engaging experts, stakeholders, and lawmakers, the state is taking proactive steps to ensure that AI is harnessed for the benefit of its citizens. As the task force begins its work, it will play a critical role in shaping the legislative landscape surrounding AI in Pennsylvania.
